Lorraine Magnussen

I have been a Randolph-Sheppard vendor in Virginia for 22 years, but it took me a long time to get to where I am. I started losing my vision while in high school. Even though my parents took me to several eye doctors, I never received a diagnosis of my condition.

I was able to graduate with a B.A. from Lynchburg College in 1968. It was difficult to study as I had to hold heavy textbooks in one hand, inches from my face. My career goals of social work or teaching were never possible because I could not read print, fill out forms, or drive. When potential employers realized that I had difficult seeing, job offers were withdrawn. I ended up with low paying jobs in food service.

When my sister started to lose her vision, we were referred to the National Institute of Health in 1971. We were given a diagnosis of hereditary form of macular degeneration, but no prognosis or referral to rehabilitation.

I was finally told in 1984 by a new ophthalmologist that I was legally blind. He referred me to the Virginia Department for the Visually Handicapped where I was introduced to talking books, Braille, and closed circuit TV readers. I was again able to read and take care of my personal business. Despite the efforts of my counselor, I was still not able to get a decent job.

In 1986, because of my background in retail and food operations, I decided to try the Randolph-Sheppard Program. I am now in my third facility.

My facility is a snack bar/convenience store at the Pentagon. We sell an assortment of hot and cold beverages, prepackaged sandwiches, fresh salads and fruit, a large variety of snacks, as well as health and beauty products.

I work 50 hours a week and love every minute. Because of adaptive technology and an excellent staff, I am able to do everything a sighted manager would do. I am responsible for training personnel, management, purchasing, inventory control, sanitation, and in particular, customer service. We like to see ourselves as unofficial morale officers of the Pentagon Third Corridor.

If you would like to visit my facility at the Pentagon, or have questions, please contact me at 703-521-1219.
